Day of Conference Checklist:
🔲 Check for Zoom Pending Updates on the morning of the call: To update Zoom, click on your user icon. It’s the area in the top right corner that likely has your initials or a photo on it. A list will pop up. In the middle is “Check for updates.” Click it, and follow the steps shown in the window.
🔲 Check your Network Connection: If you are aware of issues, text Faith and Seung (emergency contacts below) and let them know that there could be connectivity issues (i.e., possible network outage issues, etc.)
Best Practices for Zoom Calls:
- Test your video: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362313-How-Do-I-Test-My-Video-
- Make eye contact: Look at your webcam instead of your screen. This will help with visual engagement. Use the gestures and mannerisms that you would typically use in person. If you are viewing the video feed of others, try moving that feed to a monitor position just below your webcam to make this easier.
- Get close (but not too close): You want the camera to frame your face, neck, shoulders; people are drawn to faces so you don’t want to lose connection by being too far away, but you also don’t want your face to take over the entire screen.
- Check your lighting: It is essential that people can see you well; make sure you have good front light (light shines on your face). If your back is to a window, close the shades. Natural light is the best choice, but if you do not have enough natural light, you’ll need supplemental lighting.
- Avoid background noise: Mute cell phones, turn off notification sounds on your computer.
- Headset: Ideally a headset should be used to reduce background noise if one is available
